Jenna Ortega’s Bold Moves Behind Wednesday’s Creative Shifts

Netflix has released the first look at Billie Piper as the new character for Wednesday season 2. The 42-year-old British star joins the gothic comedy this summer, following a breakout debut for Jenna Ortega’s updated version of the Addams Family.

Piper will play Isadora Capri, a “dark, twisted, and wildly intelligent” character described as “musical director of the school newspaper.” At Nevermore Academy, Isadora is also the “head of music” and is most interested in teaching Wednesday Addams about her songwriting prowess. The actress is also a mentor to Emma Myers’ werewolf character, Enid Sinclair.

Billie Piper as Isadora Capri in ‘Wednesday’

Isadora Capri will be a new presence at Wednesday‘s Nevermore Academy this season. However, Piper has a long history with gothic roles, most recently known for playing Penny Dreadful‘s Brona Croft/The Bride of Frankenstein. The upcoming season also sees the return of several new characters from the first year of the show.

Netflix shared the first look at Billie Piper along with several other major announcements regarding Wednesday. After an initial release in November 2022, the surprise hit quickly built momentum, garnering 252 million viewers across the globe. It became Netflix’s most popular English-language series to date and was renewed for a second season in January 2023. This upcoming year, the macabre comedy will return for a new season in August.

In addition to Billie Piper’s character, returning stars for the season include Emma Myers, Finn Wolfhard, Hex Fey, and Omari Ford. New additions to the cast include Lady Gaga, Steve Buscemi, Joanna Lumley, and Thandie Newton. As well as Billie Piper, the full list of new season 2 cast members has now been revealed.

Wednesday follows Jenna Ortega’s version of Wednesday Addams as she embarks on her first year at Nevermore Academy, a school for “supernatural misfits”. With gothic horror themes combined with dark teen comedy and teen rebellion drama, the series quickly struck a chord with fans and viewers around the world. As a result, the show received critical acclaim, including Emmy Award nominations.

Season 3 Confirmed: Spin-Off Series in the Works

Billie Piper’s role as Isadora Capri is the first new face of Wednesday season 2. However, Netflix has announced even more additions to the growing Wednesday universe. As well as being renewed for a new season in August, Wednesday has officially been renewed for a third season. The renewal of the second season had been previously reported but was confirmed this week by Netflix.

This is not the only news in the works for the Wednesday universe. As previously unreported by The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming season is also in development to be adapted into its spin-off show. It is unclear what or who the spin-off will focus on, but co-creator Alfred Gough has hinted that more characters are up for consideration.

“We’ve been down in the weeds on that. It’s something we’re noodling; there are other characters we can look at,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. In a similar news announcement, Catherine Zeta-Jones (Morticia Addams) also confirmed the renewal on Instagram. In an edited picture, she wrote, “When Wednesday comes, a better day. Wednesday season three. It’s official… we shall return.”

Fans on social media also rushed to share their excitement at the multiple announcements. Some of their comments on the post included, “And for many more seasons,” and, “I can’t wait to see the second season, I’m waiting for it with great curiosity… and the third is already official, fantastic news!”

Another common sentiment among fans was one of relief that filming may finally get underway soon. For the second time, the new season will have a very long wait between its previous installment. The second season was announced in January 2023 but will release this summer, more than two years after the initial debut. Fans have been vocal about their distaste for waiting so long for a new season, and some feel that filming needs to start soon.

“Gripping the sheets in agony, waiting, but please… don’t let us wait 3 years again,” one fan wrote.

Tim Burton is set to return as executive producer on the upcoming season, as well as directing several episodes. The 66-year-old icon has worked with lead actress Jenna Ortega again in the lead-up to the show, having just completed Beetlejuice. The new installment is the upcoming sequel to the 1988 comedy, which Burton directed.

Billie Piper Joins ‘Wednesday’ Season 2 as Mysterious New Character

Season 2 is being described by many as a star-studded event, due to all the new additions. As well as Lady Gaga, the cast this season also welcomes Steve Buscemi, Joanna Lumley, and Thandie Newton. Returning cast members will include Gwendoline Christie (Larissa Weems) and Luis Guzmán (Gomez Addams).

Lead actress Jenna Ortega is now taking a more involved position with the upcoming season. In the news this week, it was confirmed that she will serve as a producer for the new installment. Ortega was thrust into the spotlight following some controversial comments she made on a podcast interview in February 2023.

Fans took to social media to defend the star over what many saw as unjustified criticism of the actress. Ortega had been explaining how there were “a lot of inconsistencies” with her character and that she would have to “put her foot down” in certain situations. Ortega later apologized for the comments, but director Tim Burton came to her defense, noting that her comments had been misheard.

On the show’s official Twitter account, a new statement from co-creator Alfred Gough has come out in support of Ortega. He confirmed that the new title is not an unusual addition for her, saying, “Jenna was always going to be so much more involved… We all knew it, but it feels good that we got the title to show everyone just how involved she is.”

Billie Piper is the latest star to express her excitement over joining the cast of Wednesday this summer. “There’s always something thrilling about working for Tim Burton,” Lumley told Access. “His whole mind takes him to a different world, and the world that they’ve created here for Wednesday and Nevermore and the family is just intoxicating.”

Season 3 has been confirmed, with a new Billie Piper character joining the cast of Wednesday this summer. The new season 2 cast members have been revealed, which also includes Lady Gaga, Steve Buscemi, Joanna Lumley, and TThandieNewton. Meanwhile, a spin-off series is reportedly in the works for the highly successful supernatural series.
