Critics Slam Trump’s Remarks About Pardoning Diddy
Donald Trump is once again finding himself in hot water for commenting on the ongoing trial of rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs. During an appearance on Newsmax’s Finnerty on Friday, August 1, the former president was asked if he would consider offering a presidential pardon for Combs in light of his conviction last month.
Last month, Combs, the founder and rapper of Bad Boy Records, was found guilty of a single federal charge for transportation with the intent to engage in prostitution. Combs was exonerated of more serious charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering. The seven-week trial was full of drama and testimony, including that of singer Cassie Ventura, who alleged that Combs abused and trafficked her while they were in a relationship in the past. Combs has refuted all claims.
When pressed for a response on the potential of granting a pardon to Combs, Trump gave a standard and noncommittal response but did not deny the possibility either. “Well, he was essentially, I guess, sort of half-innocent,” Trump said in the interview. “He’s still in jail or something, but he was celebrating a victory. But I guess it wasn’t as good a victory.”
Trump also spoke about their relationship, which he intimated was close in the past. “We were very friendly. I got along with him great,” Trump said during the interview. “He used to like me a lot. I think when I ran for politics, that relationship busted up. … I would certainly look at the facts. If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.”
Possible Pardon Already Discussed Before
Trump had previously spoken on the possibility of a pardon for Combs back in May. During a press briefing in the Oval Office in May, Trump was asked a similar question by Fox News reporter Peter Doocy. In the early stages of the trial, Trump had offered a similar response, promising to “look at the facts” on the case before committing to a decision. He also made it clear that the personal feelings of Combs would not influence a possible pardon decision.
“I haven’t spoken to him in years,” Trump had told Doocy. “If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.”
Combs is still in the process of waiting for the sentencing. As for the legal process surrounding the ongoing case, Combs was found guilty on a single count for transportation with the intent to engage in prostitution. While he was exonerated for the more serious and heinous allegations of sex trafficking and racketeering, the felony charge still has the potential for a prison sentence. At this time, the rapper is set to receive a sentencing hearing on October 3.
There are potentially 20 years that he could face in jail as a result of the conviction. The high-profile trial has ratcheted up the conversation about celebrity justice, presidential powers, and personal relationships, and how they would or would not impact any clemency decisions. Trump has made himself a key part of that conversation by publicly opining on the state of the case and whether or not he would pardon the rapper.
“He was celebrating a victory,” Trump said during his Newsmax interview. “But I guess it wasn’t as good a victory.”
A clip of Trump’s full remarks during the Finnerty segment has been uploaded to X (formerly Twitter). The clip has since been watched and reacted to by political commentators, hip-hop fans, and legal analysts. Whether or not Trump will make a move to grant a pardon remains to be seen, but for now, the option and the controversy have not been dismissed.
All eyes will be on the case until the sentencing hearing in October. In the meantime, there will likely be continued conjecture on whether or not Trump will act to pardon Combs or not.
