Marvel’s Ironheart Gets June 24 Release Date on Disney+
Ryan Coogler is on a roll. Having just released his latest feature film, Sinners, to box office success, the renowned director’s next project is already on the horizon: Marvel’s limited series Ironheart. The studio has released a stylish new trailer in anticipation of the show’s June 2025 debut.
The MCU series, which was originally revealed in December 2020, is the sixth and final TV installment in the studio’s Phase Five. Set to premiere on Disney+ on June 24, 2025, the six-episode show stars Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, a.k.a. Ironheart. In the comics, the character is a teenage technology genius who has her first appearance in a 2005 issue of Invincible Iron Man.
In that story, Riri Williams comes into her own as Tony Stark’s protégé, having built a prototype of his Iron Man suit in her high school workshop. The limited series will be produced by directors Ryan Coogler and Charles Officer, and writer/director Black Panther stars Dominique Thorne and Letitia Wright in supporting roles.
Marvel’s previous announcements had the MCU show originally set to release in 2023. The company later announced a revised long-term content strategy, however, and decided to release fewer titles annually in response to what it described as an “ongoing and industry-wide issue of ‘peak too soon’ releasing.” Among the titles affected by the shift was Ironheart, whose premiere date was delayed until this summer. Footage shown at the 2024 D23 convention previewed a “crime show with an Iron Man twist at the center,” described by Marvel as being “fun and gritty” and as having “the tone of a cop show.”
Marvel’s Ironheart follows the character’s live-action debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, where she gets entangled with Namor and his race of blue-skinned undersea warriors. After creating a vibranium detector device at MIT, she ends up at the Wakandan border and finds Shuri, with whom she bonds over their mutual love of science. Riri later helps the Wakandans fight off Namor’s forces by fashioning her armored suit similar to Iron Man’s. After the war, she is forced to leave the suit behind with Wakanda’s people before returning to MIT.
Technology Meets Magic
Set shortly after the events of Wakanda Forever, Ironheart‘s synopsis teases a clash of forces. “Set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ironheart pits technology against magic when Riri—determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago,” the official synopsis reads. “Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins, aka “The Hood” (Anthony Ramos).”
The cast also includes Lyric Ross as Riri’s best friend Natalie Washington; Alden Ehrenreich as Joe McGillicuddy; Manny Montana as Cousin John; Matthew Elam as Xavier Washington; and Anji White as Riri’s mother, Ronnie. Shea Coulée will play Slug. Jim Rash, who plays the dean of MIT in the series, will reprise the role from 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. Sacha Baron Cohen has also been confirmed for a role, but has not yet been announced.
The new trailer opens with Riri trapped in a poison-filled elevator inside a shuttered pizza restaurant. After two minutes pass on a timer, she’s given two more minutes to find a way out, or else she’ll die. It turns out she’s being “tested” by a mysterious man, who calls the whole situation an “interview.” Calling out to her over the elevator’s intercom, The Hood—played by Anthony Ramos—warns Riri that she’s running out of time. To get out, she has to pry open a floor-mounted capsule containing a gas mask.
Riri is annoyed, but rather than follow his instructions, she figures out her method to open the capsule. Impressed, The Hood offers to take her on as an apprentice for their unspecified crime spree. Describing it as an opportunity to make something “iconic,” she hesitates, but ultimately accepts his offer. The Hood gets right to work on his next job in the pair’s apparent new life of crime, but not before warning her that she’ll need to do some “questionable things” to get the job done.
Viewers will be wondering just how Riri is going to pull this off, morally and literally. As we’ve seen her do so far, she’s not above using her wits and creativity to get what she wants, and will likely find a way to escape the situation if need be. At the same time, friends Natalie and Joe will be justifiably concerned about Riri’s new partner, whose activities suggest they’ll need to go “black and white to make any money.”
Confirming the initial release dates for each episode, Marvel has stated that the first three episodes of Ironheart will be available on Disney+ on June 24, 2025, with the final three episodes releasing each week following. The series has not been renewed for a second season, but it is not ruled out entirely if the first run proves successful. In the meantime, interested viewers can check out the newly released trailer and behind-the-scenes featurette.
Joining forces with Marvel is Coogler’s second foray into big-screen superheroics following 2023’s Creed III. Like the Ironheart series, that film took inspiration from Black Panther, whose success and influence over the MCU are evident from this trailer. Riri’s story also has echoes of The Shield, and could potentially be the start of a new direction for the MCU if she’s successful.
