GitHub, which operates under Microsoft ownership as the foremost software development collaboration platform, has released a major update to its top AI coding tool, GitHub Copilot. GitHub announced a new “premium requests” system on Friday that establishes usage limitations for subscribers of advanced AI models beyond the basic service during complex coding operations. Users who depend on GitHub Copilot’s advanced features may see higher costs due to the new changes.
New Tiered System for Advanced AI Models
The announcement focuses on the creation of usage limits for subscribers who select AI models beyond the basic model for certain demanding computational tasks. The system will enforce “premium requests” when users operate through “agentic” coding, which allows the AI to independently generate code, and during multi-file editing tasks. Subscribers of GitHub Copilot will maintain unlimited access to OpenAI’s base model GPT-4o but will encounter monthly usage limits when working with newer models such as Anthropic’s 3.7 Sonnet.
Users subscribed to the standard Copilot Pro plan at $20 per month will have access to 300 premium requests monthly starting May 5th. Organizations using Copilot Business will have a monthly premium request limit of 300 per user, whereas Copilot Enterprise subscribers can access 1,000 premium requests per user. The Business and Enterprise tiers will experience these changes during the week of May 12th through May 19th.
Options for High-Volume Users and a New Premium Plan
GitHub understands that some users will surpass their allotted limits and thus offers solutions to satisfy higher usage demands. Users subscribed to any of the impacted plans can buy extra premium requests for twenty-four cents each. The pay-as-you-go system enables users to flexibly manage temporary increases in their advanced AI capability requirements.
The new Copilot Pro+ subscription tier from GitHub comes with a price tag of $39 monthly. Subscribers to this premium plan benefit from a 1,500 premium request monthly allowance and gain “access to the best models” such as the awaited OpenAI GPT-4.5. GitHub’s Copilot Pro+ targets users who need the highest level of AI models for their development work.
Reflecting the Costs of Advanced AI Computation
Copilot revised its pricing structure for its higher-tier AI models after an identical declaration from the AI coding platform Devin occurred yesterday. The simultaneous emergence of these developments shows that AI-powered development tools are adapting to a general trend that seems to be based on the heavy computational requirements for running these sophisticated systems. The 3.7 Sonnet model from Anthropic demonstrates improved accuracy and reliability due to stricter fact-checking, but requires substantial processing power and time, which elevates providers’ operational costs.
GitHub introduced premium requests to match its service pricing with the computational expenses required for operating complex AI models. The tiered system implementation allows GitHub to maintain sustainable access to top-tier AI technologies while accommodating different user requirements.
Copilot’s Significant Contribution to GitHub’s Growth
GitHub Copilot stands as an essential source of revenue for Microsoft despite new usage-based pricing for premium models. In August last year, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella reported that GitHub generated over 40% of its revenue growth in 2024 through Copilot. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella pointed out that Copilot’s existing revenue has gone beyond what GitHub produced before Microsoft acquired it seven years ago. The swift integration of AI-driven coding tools among developers demonstrates their powerful effect on GitHub’s financial results. The implementation of premium requests will not slow down the platform’s growth, but rather serve as an enhancement to its revenue model as the technology advances.
